NOTES ON NEWS

Define “Broadcast Journalism” in 1-3 sentences.

1. Usualness
-News is the different, the unusual, the out of the ordinary
-Unusual is more often found in bad news
2. Significance
-Important events that affect many people
3. Timeliness
- Old news isn't news: it's HISTORY
- People want to hear about the flood while it's happening, not next month
4. Proximity
- People want to know about nearby events
-New state tax law
5. Prominence
- When well-known people, buildings, or places are involved, that's news
- If you are arrested for shoplifting, that's not news
- If Zac Efron is arrested, that's news
6. Human Interest
- Stories about ordinary people or animals, humorous or dramatic
- Heartwarming or Heart-wrenching stories
- These often appear in news because they have human interest
